Good news from Brazil! The supreme court in Brasilia voted against the marco temporal, a proposed bill that would have meant a dramatic cut in Indigenous land rights.
The bill was an attempt backed by the agribusiness lobby to prevent Indigenous communities claiming land they did not occupy in 1988, the year when Brazil’s constitution was ratified. Indigenous people would therefore not have been able to get back ancestral land they had been previously evicted from.
